How can you give all Belgian citizens online travel advice?

Travelling is great! Getting away for a while to explore new horizons is wonderful, isn’t it? Yet, planning such a trip can be quite stressful. Do you need a travel pass? Or a vignette to drive into your dream city? And should you go wild camping or not? The Federal Government had all the answers, although they weren't always easy to find.

  • Accessible online information

  • Tailor-made web development

  • Close cooperation

  • WCAG compliant

  • Focus on the visually impaired

Accessibility without compromise

Although the federal government has the answers to all the above questions, it was previously not made easy for holidaymakers to find this essential information. After all, it was scattered across the various websites of the Belgian embassies, which were not adapted to mobile surfers. And if, in addition, you were blind or partially sighted, you were completely out of luck.

Nevertheless, the official travel advice from the federal government is essential information for all those who want to get on a plane well prepared. Having the right knowledge of local legislation, the local currency, or current Covid measures will save you valuable time and avoid many problems.

The federal government therefore had a clear mission for iO: create a platform that combines all information from the various Belgian embassies and make it as accessible as possible for all citizens, so that they can set off on their trip without any stress.

Solution

We gather all relevant traveller content from the Belgian embassies on one platform and ensure that everyone can access it easily.

Easy to find, even easier to read

The development team at iO made this valuable information not only easy to find, but also easy to read. They created a platform where ease of use takes precedence over a sexy look, taking into account the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG AA). These rigorous international standards are a guide to making online content more accessible and user-friendly for people with visual impairments.

To make sure we were on the right track, we did not opt for the fast lane. After initial development, we took extensive time to test our new site with a wide audience, including blind and visually impaired people. Readability, usability, functionality, performance, compatibility: we tested everything that could be tested. With all these findings, we set to work to make this valuable content as easily accessible as possible.

Destination reached

Has this become the most beautiful website we’ve ever made? Perhaps not, but it is by far the most effective one. To put it in travel terms: we deliberately didn't take the fastest route, because we wanted to make sure we didn't miss a single must-see.

Meanwhile, at the final destination, things are looking bright: a fresh, crystal-clear website with clear and comprehensive travel advice, easily accessed by the whole population.

From now on, you know everything you need to know before you leave. And you're less stressed, because all the info is at your fingertips. Enjoy your trip!
