How can one digital platform support multiple user roles?
For more than 25 years, environmental organisation Bebat has been the face of mandatory declaration and collection of batteries in Belgium. To this end, the organisation focuses on two target groups: so-called 'participants' (members of Bebat who distribute batteries in the Belgian market) and collection points (used battery return points).
But how do you give both target groups easy access to the services they need? With MyBebat , Bebat and iO put an end to the fragmented digital landscape with one central platform that brings together all user roles. A process that started with front-end support and resulted in a long-term collaboration in the field of technology, strategy, marketing and creation.

According to European directives, all batteries on the market must be inventoried, tracked and collected at the end of their life cycle. Bebat makes this possible by supporting companies with their obligation to declare and by collecting batteries from points throughout Belgium.
The target groups each have different needs. On the one hand, businesses need a platform to arrange their declarations, and on the other, collection points want to be able to easily check the status of their collection unit, see when the next scheduled collection is, or request an impromptu collection. In the past, this happened on different platforms, which was not user-friendly for users with multiple roles. For example, a retailer that was also a collection point had to log in to two systems: one for requests and one for declarations.
The solution? An integrated digital ecosystem, where users can access the functions thy need based on role rights. Bebat engaged iO primarily as a front-end partner, but that collaboration quickly expanded.

Bebat and iO: one step back, three steps forward
The Bebat - iO collaboration shows how taking a step back can lead to great leaps forward. Thanks to a strong first impression – with a series of well-thought-out UX/UI interventions during the construction of the JavaScript application – Bebat also entrusted the continuation of the UX and UI process to iO. This consisted of an in-depth analysis of the organisation, its mission and its user needs.
During this strategic phase, Bebat and iO worked together intensively, with weekly meetings at both locations. Mutual trust grew day after day, as did our understanding of Bebat's challenges and ambitions. And that paid off – not only in the construction of the product, but also in providing clear answers to new questions.
Today, iO experts from various departments are an extension of the in-house team at Bebat. Together they support the customer in the field of technology, marketing, creation and strategy.
