How to future-proof and secure a European dealer intranet?

In 2014, iO developed an intranet for Jaguar Land Rover, enabling dealers and service centres to swiftly and securely access documentation. With new technological advancements and the desire to stay up-to-date with the platform, JLR decided to partner with iO (again) to develop the application in Drupal 9. The revamped platform had been modernised, with a better Drupal integration, a responsive design, and new features. The system is future-proof and prepared for the transition to Drupal 10.

  • User-friendly and mobile-responsive portal

  • Upgrade to Drupal 9

  • Strict compliance with privacy and access control requirements

  • Streamlined processes and collaboration

  • Complete self-service for all types of users (role-access model)

One platform for communication and productivity

The original system developed by iO for JLR in 2014 based on Drupal 7, proved successful in the Benelux. Its success attracted interest from multiple countries across Europe. For the upgraded implementation, we selected the powerful Drupal platform, which offers advanced capabilities for content processing and extensive rights and role systems.

Challenge

Modernise a platform with strict access control requirements in a user-friendly and mobile-responsive way.

Solution

Using the JLR Gateway as a central hub for dealer communication, processes, and collaboration.

About JLR

JLR's Reimagine strategy is focused on achieving a sustainable vision of Modern Luxury through design. In the years leading up to 2039, they will transform JLR into a net CO2-neutral enterprise – including the production chain, our products, and our operations. They have developed a plan to reduce the emissions from their own activities and their global organisation as a whole by 2030 through approved, science-based targets. Electrification is at the core of this strategy, and by the end of the decade, the Range Rover, Discovery, and Defender model families will each include a pure electric variant, while Jaguar will be fully electric.

One central point for important information

The JLR Gateway provides easy access to information, communication, and documentation, bringing them together in one place. That includes dealer bulletins, contact details of colleagues, sales reports, KPI-related information, brochures, and new models. Additionally, the portal offers Single Sign-On access to other systems, including a ticketing system (AskJLR), and enables quick and secure retrieval of purchase and sales invoices through integrations.

Managed accessibility: the right information for the right people

Strict access control is essential due to the sensitive company information in the JLR Gateway. JLR emphasises a permission system that allows information to be accessed specifically based on country, language, brand, role, and other configurable access types. That ensures data security and enables the delivery of tailored content.

A modernised portal

The new JLR Gateway provides access to essential information and tools and strengthens the relationship between JLR and its dealers and service centres. Through redevelopment, the platform was modernised. The architecture related to navigation and content language now aligns better with Drupal. Furthermore, the entire application is responsive to ensure user-friendliness on any device, and the design has a contemporary look.

Newly added functionalities

In addition to the portal's renewal, numerous new features now improve workflows and enable self-service.

One new feature allows users to easily request access to internal applications for other users, simplifying information sharing and collaboration within JLR.

The revamped portal also offers an improved organisational structure at the dealer and service centre level. That helps optimise operational efficiency by clearly mapping out which functions or tasks still need to be taken care of.

Impact

The JLR Gateway serves as a crucial communication link between JLR on the one hand, and its dealers and service centres on the other. In October 2023, the new JLR Gateway was launched successfully for French dealers and service centres. After extensive but seamless data migration for the users, dealers and service centres in the Benelux region have also been active on the updated platform since the start of ‘24.

With approximately 140 affiliated dealers in the Benelux and France, the JLR Gateway has a significant impact. Within a week of sending out invitations, over 60% of users logged into the platform.

The system has been prepared for the future, allowing for easy expansion to multiple countries and languages for relatively simple European expansion. The JLR Gateway will be activated across Europe on 1 April 2024. That includes Germany, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Spain, and Portugal.

While the JLR Gateway already provides great value, the portal continues to evolve with various new requests on the backlog. The JLR Gateway remains an essential tool for JLR, its dealers, and its service centres, enabling efficient communication, collaboration, and increased productivity.
